The fire at the Tehran oil refinery, caused by the recent bombings, has generated a large toxic cloud that puts the health of the population at risk.
David Pino, professor of the Department of Physics at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), has warned in an interview on the Via lliure program on RAC1 that the consequences for public health can be very serious. However, he explains that everything will depend on whether what has burned is unrefined oil or if, on the contrary, it was already refined. "If it is not refined, the concentrations of pollutants are much higher and are infinitely more dangerous to health than what we are used to breathing in Catalan cities".
He also assures that compounds such as sulfur dioxide, heavy metals or also sulfuric acids. can cause respiratory problems, itchy throats, watery eyes, especially in children or adults with pathology. In addition, it can also cause burns to the skin if the rain comes into direct contact with it. If it touches the skin, it can cause burns. It should be rinsed with cold water and not scratched.
