Photonics and artificial intelligence for the diagnosis of diseases

An international consortium of universities, hospitals and companies, led by the UPC, is developing new technologies based on photonics and artificial intelligence to improve the diagnosis of various diseases.

Develop new photonics and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to diagnose early and precisely treat eye, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. This is the aim of the BE-LIGHT, European project, coordinated by the Sensors, Instrumentation and Systems Development Center (CD6) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC), and in which seven academic institutions, three hospitals and seven companies from Germany, France, Poland, Switzerland and Spain.

The consortium is led by Meritxell Vilaseca, researcher in the Department of Optics and Optometry, and Cristina Masoller, researcher in the research group Non-Linear Dynamics, Non-Linear Optics and Lasers (DONLL) in the Department of Physics.

The project has funding of 2.5 million euros from the Horizon Europe program of the European Union, within the Marie Sklodowska Curie actions (Doctoral Networks). And in this framework of the BE-LIGHT project, 11 researchers will be offered a training program in photonic technologies, AI, machine learning, computational imaging and modeling.
