The Prof. Edgar Knobloch has been awarded the Doctor Honoris Causa by the Polytechnic University of Madrid

On Friday, February 23, Professor Edgar Knobloch, a professor at the Department of Physics of the University of California at Berkeley, was awarded a Doctor Honoris Causa by the Polytechnic University of Madrid, at the proposal of the Technical School of Aeronautical Engineering and the Space.

Born in the former Czechoslovakia, he arrived in the United Kingdom as a refugee at age 12. After graduating in Mathematics at Cambridge he took his doctorate in Astronomy at Harvard University. His academic career continued in the Department of Physics, first as Assistant Professor (1978-1984) and later as Full Professor. From an initial training in Mathematics and Astronomy, his interest led to the study of Dynamic Systems with special emphasis on the role played by symmetries, and focusing his work on applications to Fluid Dynamics.

He has received numerous prestigious international awards in the United States, Australia, New Zealand and France, and is also Doctor Honoris Causa for the Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse since 2012.

His connection with Spanish Universities began at the end of the 80's when he visited our group at the UPC in the late 80's and later he extended to the group of Professor Jose Manuel Vega at the UPM, sponsor of the proposal of Honor Cause. Professor E. Knobloch has maintained a close and continuous scientific collaboration with the UPC Fluid Dynamics group since its first visit, which has been shown in joint projects and a large number of articles with different members of the group.
