“Dynamical Modelling of Non-Equilibrium Interacting Quantum Gases”

Abstract

The development and application of theories describing non-equilibrium quantum systems in the presence of thermal and quantum fluctuations and long-range interactions is a challenging task. This talk presents a generalised dynamical framework simultaneously addressing both coherent and incoherent degrees of freedom of an interacting quantum fluid: this model consists of a stochastic extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation, self-consistently coupled to an appropriate quantum Boltzmann equation, applicable for generic long-range interactions and incorporating a full quasiparticle spectrum. As this model encompasses the majority of numerically-implemented dynamical models in the context of ultracold atomic gases with both local and dipolar interactions, it allows us to critically re-assess the approximations made in reducing the full formalism to various commonly-implemented models: a brief overview of my applications of selected limiting cases of this model (to phase transition dynamics, quantum vortices and mixtures) will be given in the local regime. Finally, I will briefly touch upon the somewhat unexpected application of our formalism in the cosmological context, where gravity simultaneously plays the role of an effective long-range interaction and an effective, self-consistently determined, confining potential.
